About Yoga

Yoga to me is a means of unravelling myself and feeling what it is to be me, here and now. We practice physical postures called asanas, which stretch and mobilize the joints.  We use our breathing to help us connect with the present and relax into the positions. This releases tension and allows us to move more freely and be more relaxed in our day-to-day life. However, yoga is not gymnastics; you do not have to be flexible to do yoga. You just have to be here!

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic form of yoga where the movements flow with the breath.   Each posture is linked and flows into the next posture in the sequence.  I love this style of yoga as the flowing movement allows me to connect with the here and now of what I am doing.  Ashtanga Yoga consists of eight sequences of postures, which progress in difficulty. However, even the first sequence is challenging.  It can take a long time to do the full sequence.  In my Ashtanga yoga classes, I aim to make Ashtanga Yoga accessible to all, adapting the class to suit the ability of students.  Click here for more information about Ashtanga Yoga.

Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga uses props to help students access postures.  It has a particular focus on correct alignment.  Although I do not teach Iyengar Yoga, it influence my practice and my teaching.

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga is a relatively new term but it has been part of yoga practice for a long time.  Its main characteristic is that the postures are held for longer. This allows the connective tissue that holds the joints together to relax. Props are often used, to help the body to relax into the posture.  This style of Yoga is meditative and restorative.  I enjoy this more meditative practice as it allows me to really feel, and to consciously relax.
